Security System Evaluation: What to Expect
A security system evaluation should answer practical questions: What equipment is already installed? What still works? Which risks are not covered? What would it cost to repair, reprogram, expand, or replace the system?
New-service consultation: New clients considering new services receive an on-site visit and up to one hour of consultation at no cost. Troubleshooting, diagnostics, repairs and other technical service on existing systems are billed at standard service rates; when applicable, the standard on-site service visit is $195.
What to gather before the evaluation
A few details can make the first conversation more useful:
- the property address and whether it is residential or commercial;
- the alarm panel, camera recorder, or access-control brand and model;
- photos of keypads, control cabinets, cameras, locks, and communicators;
- a description of current problems or desired features;
- the name of the current monitoring or platform provider, if any;
- known user codes, account ownership information, and available documentation.
Do not send passwords or sensitive codes through an unsecured message. A technician can explain the safest way to provide information needed for authorized service.
What an on-site visit may include
The exact work should be stated in the service order. A typical visit may include a visual review of the equipment, discussion of coverage goals, basic testing that can be performed safely, identification of compatibility issues, and recommendations for next steps.
Some conditions cannot be confirmed without additional labor, replacement parts, manufacturer support, network access, lift equipment, or coordination with another trade. Fire alarm, access-control, and life-safety work may also require plans, permits, inspections, or approval by the authority having jurisdiction. Those items should not be assumed to be included in a basic visit.
Repair, reuse, or replace?
An older system does not automatically need to be replaced. Existing wiring, sensors, cameras, locks, or enclosures may be reusable when they are in good condition and compatible with the proposed design. A professional evaluation should compare the cost and limitations of reuse with the benefits of replacement.
- Repair may make sense when the system is serviceable and the problem is isolated.
- Reprogram may work when compatible equipment is operational but tied to outdated settings or a previous provider.
- Expand may be appropriate when the core system is sound but coverage is incomplete.
- Replace may be the better value when equipment is unsupported, unreliable, incompatible, or unable to provide required features.

Questions to ask before scheduling
- Is the appointment a consultation, a diagnostic service call, or both?
- What is the visit charge, and what time or testing does it include?
- Will any portion be credited toward approved work?
- Are travel, lift, permit, programming, or manufacturer fees separate?
- Will I receive a written proposal before additional work begins?
Get the scope in writing
Avenger Security can review security, video, access-control, and monitoring needs for Austin-area homes and businesses. Before the visit, we will clarify the known scope and applicable charge. After the evaluation, recommended work should be documented so you can compare equipment, services, recurring fees, and exclusions without relying on a vague “free system” promise.
