Brivo Microsoft Active Directory Integration | Identity Connector & SSO

Brivo Microsoft Active Directory Integration | Identity Connector & SSO

Brivo can integrate with Microsoft directory services to reduce duplicate user administration between your IT environment and your physical access-control system. For organizations already managing employees through Microsoft Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID, Brivo can provide a more efficient way to keep users, groups and access permissions aligned with the organization's identity-management process.

Avenger Security Services / Security Tekton designs and supports Brivo access-control systems throughout Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Hutto and Central Texas. For larger organizations, schools, healthcare groups, multi-site businesses and corporate facilities, Microsoft directory integration can significantly reduce manual credential administration and improve offboarding consistency.

How Brivo Active Directory integration works

Brivo's identity-management tools can synchronize directory information with Brivo Access so the organization's corporate directory remains the primary source for personnel changes. Brivo has documented support for Microsoft Active Directory and LDAP-based directory synchronization, including the ability to map directory groups to Brivo groups, create users from mapped groups and suspend Brivo users based on directory attributes.

This can reduce the need to create or remove the same employee manually in both Microsoft and Brivo. When properly designed, a change in the organization's identity directory can drive the corresponding access-control workflow rather than depending entirely on duplicate data entry.

Identity Connector vs. Single Sign-On

Identity Connector and Single Sign-On solve different problems.

  • Identity Connector / directory synchronization: Helps synchronize users and groups between the organization's identity directory and Brivo Access.
  • Single Sign-On: Allows authorized Brivo administrators to authenticate through the organization's identity provider rather than maintaining a separate Brivo password workflow.

Microsoft Entra ID can also be configured for supported Brivo administrator SSO. The exact architecture depends on the customer's Microsoft environment, Brivo edition, administrator policy and whether the organization needs directory provisioning, SSO or both.

Brivo Professional or Enterprise Edition is required

For the integration architecture described on this page, we recommend Brivo Access Professional Edition or Enterprise Edition. These editions include the identity-management and API capabilities needed for more advanced corporate integrations.

Brivo Access Professional Edition

Manufacturer-suggested MSRP planning price: $236.00 per month base plan + $12.40 per door per month.

  • Professional Edition feature set
  • Up to 30 administrators
  • Identity Connector
  • Brivo API connection / API integrations
  • 500 Brivo Mobile Passes
  • SSO capability according to Brivo's current edition matrix
  • Enhanced reporting and access features appropriate for larger commercial systems

Professional is often the logical starting point for an organization that wants Microsoft directory integration without needing the broader enterprise-scale feature set.

Brivo Access Enterprise Edition

Manufacturer-suggested MSRP planning price: $545.00 per month base plan + $14.40 per door per month.

  • Enterprise Edition feature set
  • Unlimited administrators
  • Identity Connector
  • Single Sign-On
  • Brivo API connection / API integrations
  • 1,000 Brivo Mobile Passes
  • Expanded enterprise reporting, incident, shared-access and video capabilities

Enterprise is typically the better fit when the access-control system is part of a larger corporate security, identity, visitor, reporting or multi-site operating environment.

Example monthly pricing

Edition Base Monthly Plan Per Door / Month Example: 10 Doors
Professional $236.00 $12.40 $360.00 / month
Enterprise $545.00 $14.40 $689.00 / month

Pricing note: These figures are manufacturer-suggested MSRP planning prices provided for comparison and budgeting. Some licensed Brivo dealers may charge more than MSRP depending on the required support relationship, service commitments, custom integrations, programming, IT coordination, API work or other managed services. Hardware, installation, credentials, taxes, optional services and custom integration labor are separate unless specifically included in a proposal.

Why integrate physical access control with Microsoft identity management?

For organizations with frequent employee changes, manual access-control administration can become an operational problem. A person may be removed from Microsoft but remain active in the access-control system, or a new employee may require multiple departments to enter the same information independently.

A properly implemented directory integration can improve that workflow by making the corporate identity platform the authoritative source for employee status and group membership.

  • Reduce duplicate user entry
  • Reduce data-entry mistakes
  • Speed up employee onboarding
  • Improve employee offboarding
  • Map Microsoft groups to Brivo access groups
  • Support more consistent access policies
  • Reduce the chance that terminated or transferred users remain active unnecessarily
  • Improve coordination between IT, security and facilities teams

Microsoft groups can support access-control workflows

A common architecture is to use Microsoft directory groups as part of the employee-management process and map appropriate groups into Brivo. The exact group structure should be designed carefully. An IT group such as “Austin Office Employees” may correspond to a Brivo access group that receives normal building access, while a separate management or facilities group may receive additional doors or schedules.

The organization should define who owns the directory groups, who approves physical access and how exceptions are handled. Directory synchronization does not eliminate the need for a documented access-control policy.

Offboarding is one of the biggest advantages

Employee termination and role changes are among the strongest reasons to integrate identity management with access control. When a person's employment status changes, physical access should be reviewed at the same time as email, network access, VPN access and other corporate systems.

Brivo's directory integration can help reduce the gap between IT offboarding and physical credential revocation. The exact suspension or removal behavior should be tested and documented before the integration is placed into production.

Brivo API integration for customized workflows

Professional and Enterprise environments also support Brivo API integrations. The API can be important where the customer needs workflows beyond standard directory synchronization, such as connections with HR systems, visitor-management platforms, custom applications, identity-management platforms or other enterprise software.

Custom API integration is separate engineering work. The scope should define the authoritative system, required fields, synchronization logic, failure handling, security permissions and who will maintain the integration after deployment.

Active Directory, Entra ID and terminology

Microsoft's cloud identity platform is now called Microsoft Entra ID, formerly Azure Active Directory. Many organizations still use the term “Active Directory” broadly to refer to either traditional on-premises Microsoft Active Directory or cloud-based Microsoft identity management.

Brivo integration design should identify the actual directory environment before implementation. On-premises Active Directory synchronization, Microsoft Entra ID SSO and other identity workflows are not automatically the same configuration.

Who is a good fit for Brivo Identity Connector?

  • Corporate offices with an established IT identity-management process
  • Multi-site organizations
  • Schools and universities with centralized staff directories
  • Healthcare organizations
  • Manufacturing and warehouse organizations
  • Technology companies
  • Organizations with frequent employee onboarding and offboarding
  • Businesses that already manage permissions through Microsoft groups
  • Companies that want IT and physical-security administration to operate from a more consistent identity source

Implementation requires coordination between security and IT

A directory integration touches both the physical-security environment and the customer's IT environment. We recommend identifying an authorized IT administrator and an authorized physical-security administrator before implementation.

The integration plan should document directory servers or Entra configuration, group mapping, administrator authentication, Brivo account permissions, firewall and network requirements, synchronization behavior, credential assignment and the process for handling exceptions.
