Battery Testing & Replacement
Test battery-backup operation and replace failed batteries when the fixture supports field battery replacement.
Austin, Texas • Emergency Lighting & Exit Sign Service
Avenger Security / Security Tekton provides emergency-lighting and exit-sign testing, troubleshooting, battery replacement, fixture replacement and inspection-preparation support for commercial and licensed facilities throughout Austin and Central Texas.
Austin Fire's current maintenance-inspection guidance identifies illuminated exit signs and functioning emergency lighting as routine fire and life-safety inspection items. This means a facility can have a current fire alarm inspection and still receive a life-safety deficiency for failed exit signage or emergency lighting.
Test battery-backup operation and replace failed batteries when the fixture supports field battery replacement.
Replace failed or obsolete emergency-light units when practical and coordinate line-voltage electrical work when required.
Replace failed illuminated exit signs and combination exit-sign/emergency-light fixtures with appropriate listed equipment.
Walk the facility, test emergency-lighting and exit-sign backup operation, identify failed units and correct practical deficiencies before inspection.
Verify fixtures remain illuminated or activate on battery power when normal power is removed or the test function is operated.
Address failed fixtures identified during Austin Fire, licensing, facility or contractor inspections.
Austin Fire's daycare inspection-preparation checklist specifically calls out illuminated exit signs with battery backup where required and emergency lighting in interior stairs, corridors and windowless areas with child occupancy.
The checklist instructs facilities to test the battery backup using the fixture's test button when provided, or by removing normal power when necessary. Exit signs should remain illuminated on backup power, and emergency-light heads should illuminate during the test.

Assisted living, memory care, nursing and other licensed facilities are often inspected for more than the fire alarm system alone. Means of egress, exit signage, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, sprinkler condition and other life-safety items can all affect inspection results.
We can coordinate emergency-lighting and exit-sign checks with fire alarm inspection, deficiency correction and other life-safety preparation so the facility is not addressing one system while overlooking another obvious inspection item.
See our assisted living and nursing facility fire alarm inspection guide and Texas assisted living fire alarm requirements.
Indicator-light meaning varies by manufacturer. A green indicator commonly shows normal AC power or charging status, while a red indicator can indicate charging, battery condition or fault status depending on the exact fixture. The indicator light alone should not be treated as proof that the backup battery is good. The fixture should be function-tested according to the manufacturer's instructions.
For electrically illuminated exit signs that require emergency backup, the backup source must operate when normal power is lost. Combination exit-sign/emergency-light units should also activate their emergency-light heads during the backup-power test.
Austin Fire's daycare guidance notes that if a fixture does not have a test button, normal power may need to be removed at the circuit so the backup function can be verified.
Austin Fire's published emergency-lighting examples state that emergency-lighting equipment should be UL listed and installed according to its listing and the manufacturer's instructions.
For hardwired equipment, line-voltage wiring, circuit changes or electrical-panel work may require coordination with a qualified electrical contractor depending on the scope. We can identify the life-safety deficiency, replace serviceable equipment within our scope and coordinate additional electrical work when needed.
This is especially useful before a licensed-facility inspection. The fire alarm may be fully functional and properly tagged, but the facility can still fail a broader life-safety inspection because of a dead exit sign, failed emergency light, blocked exit, expired extinguisher or another maintenance issue.
